Have you ever experienced vibrations coming from your vehicle while driving? We can’t all be experts on car repair, but we can narrow down a few possible causes of this fairly common automobile issue. Let’s take a look at common causes of vehicle vibration and their warning signs!
Tires
One of the most common causes of vehicle vibration is an issue with the tires. Whether they are out of balance and need an alignment, are low on air, or have been punctured by a sharp object, they need to be inspected immediately, before they cause further damage or put you at heightened risk while driving.
Rotors
If you’re experiencing shaking in your steering wheel when braking, the problem could be coming from your brake rotors. Rotors can get bent out of shape with excessive wear and tear and can become deformed, making it more difficult for the brake pads and calipers to get a firm grip on them. Vibration from this source can sometimes be felt through the brake pedal, as well.
Suspension
If your car seems to be symptom-less while stopped or sitting still, but begins vibrating when you change speed or travel over bumps, there may be an issue with the vehicle’s suspension. Suspension problems can also cause symptoms like periodic squeals and thumps. If you believe your suspension to be the cause of the vibration, make note of when the vibration occurs (during vehicle speed changes, engine speed/rpm changes, or randomly) so your vehicle repair technician can better diagnose the issue.
Engine
Shaking or shuddering during acceleration is usually the result of an engine issue. The exact cause can be anything from failed spark plugs, to a dirty air or fuel filter, to a faulty airflow sensor. Engine issues can be simple fixes or a cause of major vehicle failure, so addressing engine concerns promptly is very important.
As always, it’s best to take your vehicle into a professional car repair shop right away if you feel that something might be wrong, no matter what the signs or symptoms are.
