Is Your Heater Leaving You Out in the Cold?

Updated: Aug 6, 2021

The weather is officially cold and that means that it’s time to get the car heater working. If you’ve tried turning it on and it’s not coming through, then you need to find out why. Your car’s heating system does more than just keep you warm on frosty mornings too. You need it to help defrost your car in the morning as well. Here are a few reasons that your car’s heat may not be working and what you can do about it.

The Coolant Levels are Low

When you think of your car’s coolant, your mind probably drifts to thoughts of summer, but coolant is important for your car year-round. In the winter time, coolant flows to the heater core which moves warm air into your car.

If your car is blowing cool air into your cabin for more than a few moments, the coolant levels could be running a little low. Though topping it off can help, there may be a larger problem in play.

The Heater Core Isn’t Doing its Job

Your car’s heater core is essentially a small radiator that helps your car stay warm. However, when the heater core isn’t heating up properly, and you’ve already checked the coolant, then it could be clogged. A clog within the tubing of the heater core will obstruct the flow of hot air and cause a myriad of problems in your car.

The Fans Aren’t Blowing

If the coolant looks fine, the heater core is doing its job, and there’s still no heat, then your problem may be the fans. Your heater core could generate all the heat in the world, but without the fans to move it into your cabin, you won’t benefit from it. An easy way to check on the fans is to listen to see if its working, as most fans make some kind of noise.

Get the Help You Need for Your Heater

If you’re having heating troubles, then you will probably need the help of a seasoned mechanic to solve them. Though topping off a little coolant might be easy enough, anything beyond that requires an experienced technician to ensure that the problem is fixed without causing further damages.
